What do you understand by the term “Forestry”?
The term itself specifies that it is related to Forests.
The exact definition of forestry is: “Forestry is the science or practice of planting, managing, conserving and maintaining forests and it's associated resources with the aim of meets the goal of human benefit.”
As we all know that forest is a very important part of an ecosystem. Therefore, management of forest is required and is done by the foresters (forest professionals). A practitioner of forestry is known as a Forester.


Forestry is the science and craft of creating, managing, using, conserving, and repairing forests and associated resources, in a sustainable manner, to meet desired goals, needs, and values for human benefit. Forestry is practised in plantations and natural stands. The challenge of forestry is to create systems that are socially accepted while sustaining the resource and any other resources that might be affected. The forest science has elements that belong to the biological, physical, social, political and managerial sciences.

Educational Requirements

If you have passed your intermediate examination with PCB group then you are eligible for this course. The duration of B.Sc forestry professional course is 4 years divided into 8 semesters.

Career and Scope


A lot of career opportunities is available in the forestry field in both public as well as the private sector.
There are many public sector jobs some are: work in zoological parks, wildlife ranges, corporate having their own plantation for timbering, wildlife research institutes, Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and it is affiliated institutes, wildlife department, forest department, national park and sanctuaries, forest nurseries.
Also the Bachelor degree (Forestry) candidates can apply for the central government through the IFS (Indian Forest Service) examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). You can also be a lecturer in and University/ College and Institution.

The pay scale in the field of forestry depends upon the firm you are working for. The salary in the government sector is as per the government pay scales. A forester earns an average salary of $47,548 annually in abroad. Depending upon experience and qualification, you can earn an annual salary of around Rs. 5 to 6 lacs in India.
